The importance of reading Kirtan Sohila
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
Kirtan Sohila, the night time prayer, is essential not just for Amritdhari Sikhs but for all Sikhs. Whether we are Keshdhari or not, the true power of this Gurbani has immense effect on anyone who recites it. It contains the contribution of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Ram Daas Ji and Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
A notable sakhi which highlights the powers of this bani, is from the times of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. A wealthy man donated land to Guru Ji, and this land was later renamed Kartarpur. It would soon develop to be a religious centre for Sikhs and devotees would travel long distances to get darshan of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj.
Bhai Lehna Ji, who would later become Guru Angad Dev Ji, was massaging the feet of Guru Ji. Whilst doing this, he noticed that Guru Sahib's feet had began to bleed, and as he looked he noticed cuts, as if Guru Ji had walked over thorns. Bhai Sahib asked Guru Ji why this had occurred, and in response, Guru Nanak Dev Ji asked Bhai Lehna Ji to call a Sikh, who was milking his goats in the field. That Sikh was reciting Kirtan Sohila whilst he was doing his afternoon's work in the fields. When he came before Guru Ji, he bowed. Guru Sahib told the Sikh that whenever someone recites Kirtan Sohila, he is there with them. Whilst he was walking around the fields reciting the bani, Guru Ji was behind him, taking any pains which tried to come near him. The cuts had been inflicted upon the Sikh who had stepped on some thorns in the fields, but because he was reciting Kirtan Sohila, Guru Nanak Dev Ji took the pain upon his own feet.
The Sikh asked Guru Sahib for forgiveness and asked what he should do next. Guru Sahib told the Sikh that Kirtan Sohila should be read before going to sleep. One should wash their hands, feet and face, and then read with full concentration. If one does this, Guru Ji sits beside you and listens, and with this, if you were to die in your sleep, you won't become an evil spirit in your next life. Instead Guru Nanak Dev Ji will protect you.
